Details of Delhi

Delhi is the Union Territory of India containing New Delhi as country's capital. It is also referred to as National Capital Territory (NCT). It is a massive metropolitan area situated in the North India. 

Delhi became a state in 1992 under the National Capital Territory Act (NCT).It is a bustling metropolis with an exquisite blend of modernisation and carefully preserved antiquity. One of the country’s largest urban agglomerations, Delhi sits astride (but primarily on the west bank of) the Yamuna River. There is a semi-arid climate with high variation of temperature between summer and winter.

Delhi sprawls over an area of 1,484 square kilometres, it is one of the largest and fastest growing cities in India with a population of 16.7 million. Delhi ranks fifth among the Indian states and union territories in human development index. The city is popular for its enriched culture and heritage and widely regarded as the heart of the nation.

Old Delhi is a medieval web of narrow, crowded streets woven beneath the Red Fort’s imposing walls which was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century while the British-built New Delhi boasts broad, leafy boulevards, grand colonial buildings and gracious Lutyens bungalows. It is surrounded by Faridabad, Gurugram and Noida which are the top IT and cyber hubs within Delhi NCR.

 

Delhi NCR is counted as one of the most populated urban metropolitan areas in the world. The city has a robust infrastructure and is enjoying a rapid economic growth from the last several years. 


Delhi has been the capital city for centuries and centre of succession for mighty empires and powerful kingdoms.

 

Delhi is not only the largest commercial center of North India but also the largest center of small industries in the country. Delhi was made the capital of Independent India in 1950 and it was declared a state in 1992.

History Of Delhi

Delhi is of great historical significance for it serves as an important commercial, transportation and cultural hub. It also has the distinction of being the political centre of India. The Delhi Sultanate is the name given for a series of five successive dynasties, which remained as a dominant power of Indian subcontinent.

In 1803 ,the Delhi was captured by the British East India Company. During Company Rule in 1911, the capital of British India was shifted from Calcutta to New Delhi. After India’s independence from the British, New Delhi became the capital of the newly formed Republic of India in 1950.

Public transport in the metropolis includes the Delhi Metro ,the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus system, auto-rickshaws, cycle-rickshaws, e-rickshaws, Grameen Seva, taxis and Railways .

·   Airport Connectivity: Delhi airport ranks amongst some of the busiest  airports in the world. It is known as Indira Gandhi International Airport which is the main gateway for the city's domestic and international civilian air traffic. The airport is situated in the south-west part of Delhi. 

·   Metro Connectivity: Delhi Metro is India's first modern public transportation system, which has revolutionised travel by providing a fast, reliable, safe, and comfortable means of transport. Delhi Metro has a network of over 200 stations covering a total length of close to 300kms. The metro shuttles down 25 lakh passengers everyday.

·   Road Connectivity: Delhi has one of the best road infrastructures in the country. It is well-connected by National Highways to diverse parts of the country. The major roads within Delhi are the Ring Road, Outer Ring Road and several expressways which connect Delhi to nearby cities and states of North India. 

·   Railway Connectivity: In Indian Railway, Delhi is the headquarters of Northern Railways and is a major junction in the Indian Railways Network. New Delhi Railway Station (NDRS), Old Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Anand Vihar, Delhi Sarai Rohilla and Delhi Cantt. are some of the most prominent railway stations located in Delhi.

·   Places of Worship: Delhi has several famous places of worship belonging to various religions. Among all of them, Akshardham is one of the largest temple which includes a major tourist point. Other famous religious sites include Lal Mandir, Laxminarayan Temple, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, Lotus Temple, Jama Masjid and ISKCON Temple.

·   Major  Markets: Delhi is also a hub for shopping markets which includes Connaught Place, Chandni Chowk, Sarojini Nagar, Khan Market, Lajpat Nagar, Dilli Haat etc along with various shopping malls and complexes.
