Details of Shahdara

Shahdara is a district located in the eastern part of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, India. It is one of the 11 districts of Delhi and is named after the Persian term "Shahdara" which means "door of kings". Shahdara is one of the newest formed districts in 2012 which is enclosed by the areas such as Dilshad Garden, Seelampur and Vivek Vihar. The district is headed by the Deputy Commissioner followed by an additional District Magistrate (ADM) as second-1n-command.

The district has a rich history and is named after a gate in the old city walls of Delhi that led to the city of Shahdara on the banks of the Yamuna River. The Shahdara district has a varied character with Shahdara Sub Division as predominantly rural, Vivek Vihar Sub Division and the Seemapuri Sub Division as a mix of both urban and rural.

The present Shahdara district is distributed into two zones run by East Delhi Municipal Corporation which includes:

  • North
  • South

About Shahdara

Shahdara district is one of the oldest suburbs of Delhi and integral to what is known as Purani Dilli (Old Delhi).

It is bordered by the Yamuna River to the east and the districts of North East Delhi to the north and east, East Delhi to the south, and Central Delhi to the southwest.

The district has eight Union councils, among them one of the biggest is Rohtash Nagar, which is led by the heir of Rohilkhand, Great Grandson of Diwan-e-Khas-Chirag-al Masood Rohilla who is known as Chirag Rohilla. 

Shahdara district is partitioned into three sub-divisions which include:

  • Vivek Vihar
  • Seemapuri
  • Shahdara

History Of Shahdara

Shahdara has a rich history dating back to the Mughal era. It was an important centre of trade and commerce and home to several gardens and tombs. The district was named after a gate in the old city walls of Delhi. In the 19th century, it became an important industrial centre with the establishment of factories and mills.

After India gained independence in 1947, Shahdara became a part of Delhi and has since undergone significant development. Today, it is home to several historical and cultural attractions, including the Akshardham Temple and the Shahdara Bagh. It is also an important centre of industry, with several industrial areas located within its boundaries.

  • Welcome Metro Station - This station is also located on the Red Line of the Delhi Metro and is located near the Shahdara border. It connects Shahdara to other parts of Delhi, including Dilshad Garden, Rithala, and Kashmere Gate.
  • Mansarovar Park Metro Station - This station is located on the Pink Line of the Delhi Metro and connects Shahdara to other parts of Delhi, including Mayur Vihar, South Campus, and Majlis Park.
  • Jhilmil Metro Station - This station is also located on the Pink Line of the Delhi Metro and connects Shahdara to other parts of Delhi, including Anand Vihar, Karkardooma, and Majlis Park.

Road Connectivity:

Shahdara district has good road connectivity with various parts of Delhi and neighboring states. Some of the major roads that pass through or are connected to Shahdara district include:

  • National Highway 9 - This highway passes through Shahdara district and connects Delhi to various parts of Uttar Pradesh, including Ghaziabad, Meerut, and Kanpur.
  • National Highway 24 - This highway is located near Shahdara district and connects Delhi to various parts of Uttar Pradesh, including Lucknow and Varanasi.
