South Delhi is one of the 11 legislative districts of the National Capital Territory NCT of Delhi in India, enclosed by the districts of New Delhi to the north, Faridabad District of Haryana state to the southeast, Gurgaon district of Haryana to the southwest  and South West Delhi to the west.

The district has three subdivisions

  • Saket 
  • Hauz Khas
  • Mehrauli

The district headquarter is at M.B. Road, Saket. South District is predominantly urban but also has a sizeable rural area having 42 villages:

  • 13 in Saket
  • 18 in Hauz Khas
  • 11 in Mehrauli Sub-division

About South Delhi

South Delhi is recognized to be the most affluent area of Delhi with leading infrastructure’s, incessant power supply and ample water resource. This district has 20% Green cover accompanied with numerous spacious green parks, wildlife sanctuary, biodiversity parks and green belts.

Various tourists’ places like Chattarpur Mandir, Lotus Temple, Lodi Garden and Kalindi Kunj lie in this district. Some of the most scenic heritage sites are part of this district which includes Jahaz Mahal, Zafar Mahal, Hauz Khas Complex, Bijay Mandal, Qutub Minar, Mehrauli Archaeological Park and the Safdarjung ‘s Tomb.

History Of South Delhi

South Delhi has a strong historical background having both ancient and modern structures renovated under Delhi tourism  board which have lured people from all parts of the country. The general topography of the district is plain though some part of the district represents right characteristics of the old Aravalli hills. From the historical point of view, South Delhi was a seat of Power from the very beginning as evident by the Tughlaq Abad Fort made by the Tuglaks, till the time other fort’s were constructed by Mughals.

Airport Connectivity:

South Delhi District has easy access to the Indira Gandhi International & Domestic Airports which is situated just 19 Kms or 40 minutes away.

Metro Connectivity:

Metro covers a total distance of 34 km in South Delhi but with the recent expansion of the Metro Phase III, residents of the South District have also benefited with the upcoming Pink Line of Delhi Metro which will ease the amount of road traffic and congestion in the district.

Railways Connectivity:

The New Delhi Railway Station situated just 9 Kms away and the Old Delhi Railway Station located just 15 Kms away from defence colony. South Delhi is impressively connected with all the three main railway stations of Delhi viz: Old Delhi, New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin.

Major Roads:

Mehrauli -Gurgaon Road, Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, Aurobindo Marg, August Kranti Marg, Press Enclave Road, etc are some of the most eminent roads which are a part of South Delhi, while  arterial roads like Inner Ring Road and Outer Ring Road passes through it.

India’s premier institutes:

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, All India Institute of Medicine Sciences and National Institute of Fashion Technology lie in the Hauz Khas locality of South Delhi. The district also hosts Jawaharlal Nehru University campus (JNU).

Major Markets:

This district is connected with vibrant street shopping markets of Delhi which includes Sarojini Nagar, Dilli Haat (INA), M Block Greater Kailash, Green Park market, Khan Market etc and malls such as DLF, MGF Metropolitan, Select City walk.

Nehru Place Market, the HUB is known as the biggest Indian IT market, famous for computer hardware, desktop, printers, laptops, hard disks, monitors. Nehru place, also called as the heart of Indian IT industry, is situated in South district of New Delhi.
