North Delhi is one of the 11 districts of the National Capital Territory of Delhi in India. It is situated in the northern part of Delhi and is bounded by the Yamuna River on the east.
It covers an area of approximately 60 square kilometers and has a population of over 8.5 million people as per the census 2011 making it one of the most densely populated areas in Delhi. The administrative headquarters of the district is Alipur.
North Delhi is a bustling commercial and business hub, with several markets and shopping areas such as the Chandni Chowk market, which is famous for its street food and traditional shops selling textiles, jewelry, and spices. North Delhi has a rich and diverse history, starting from its association with the Kuru Kingdom and later the Mauryan Empire. During the medieval period, it was ruled by various dynasties, including the Tomaras, Chauhans, and Mughals. In the 17th century, the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan established Shahjahanabad, which included North Delhi and landmarks like the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, and Chandni Chowk.
During the British colonial period, North Delhi became a part of the Delhi Province. After India gained independence, it became a part of the National Capital Territory of Delhi.
Today, North Delhi is a thriving urban center with a blend of modern and traditional architecture, and it is home to important government and educational institutions, markets, and residential areas.
The district is very well connected to other districts of the National Capital through an extensive network of roadways, metro, railways and airways.
Railway Connectivity:
The district includes a Railroad Station comprising facilities like a Ticket Office, Platforms and so forth. It also has Old Delhi Railway Station along with the ancient and famous Old Subzi Mandi that forms a part of this District including, Delhi Gate and Sarai Rohilla Railway Station.
Bus Connectivity:
The Inter-State Bus Terminus or ISBT at Kashmiri Gate is also a center from where Delhi Buses commence and terminate.
Road Connectivity:
To ease commuting in north Delhi, a four-lane flyover project was brought into service which later on helped in clearing the crowded areas near Outer Ring Road, Jagatpur, Buhari, Milan Vehar, Gopalpur and Sangam.
Metro Connectivity:
The city has a rapid transit system in the form of Delhi Metro which connects the district to the nearby areas which include Noida, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad.
The nearest metro station is Tiz Hazari (Located on the Red Line) and Ramakrishna Ashram Marg, Located on the Blue Line along with Chandni Chowk on the yellow line.
