Mumbai formerly known as Bombay, is India’s largest city and also the financial and entertainment capital of India. Mumbai is one of the world’s top ten centres of commerce in terms of global financial flow, contributing 6.16% of India’s GDP. The city holds important financial institutions such as the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), National Stock Exchange (NSE), along with the headquarters of numerous Indian companies and multinational corporations.

Being the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra, it is also popularly called as Mayanagri, the city of dreams, the one that never sleeps  which offers unique experiences, from the beautiful promenades to the cosmopolitan culture.

Mumbai is the second most populous city in India and the seventh most populous city in the world.

Mumbai comprises of two revenue districts namely, Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban.

History Of Mumbai

The City of Bombay, as it was then called came in light in the year 150 A.D. through the geographical work of renowned geographer, Ptolemy. The City consisting of several islands were then ruled by Kolis and Agris, the native inhabitants of Mumbai.

 

In the year 1534 ,these seven islands were handed over to the Portuguese colonialists by Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat.

 

The state of Maharashra was officially created in 1960 with Bombay as its capital city. Through the years ,the city continued to be known as ‘Bombay’ only before it was renamed to ‘Mumbai’ in 1996. Today Mumbai is one of the most visited cities of India.

Gems and Jewellery: Mumbai is the hub of India’s Jewellery industry, receiving the majority of the country’s gold and rough diamond imports. It is also the largest exporter of gems and jewellery,  accounting 69% of the total export of gems and jewellery from India.

 

Automobiles: The automobile sector has played a key role in the industrialization of Mumbai. Every segment of the automobile is represented in the city, several companies have corporate branches in Mumbai, including the largest vehicle manufacturer in India.

 

Research Centres: Top notch institutions in Mumbai include the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research ,the National Chemical Laboratory, the National Centre for Cell Science, the National Institute of Virology, the National AIDS Research Institute, and the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute.

 

Telecommunications: State-owned Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited  (MTNL) is the largest telephone service provider in Mumbai.

  

Road Connectivity: Mumbai is connected by National Highway 4, National Highway 8, National Highway 17 and National Highway 222. It is also linked with Pune by a six-lane Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The Bandra-Worli Sea Link Bridge, together with Mahim Causeway, links this island city to the western suburbs.

 

Railway Connectivity: Mumbai is the headquarters of two Indian Railway zones: the Central Railway and the Western Railway. The city’s transport consists of three separate railway networks: the Central, Western and the Harbour Line. Mumbai has the strongest local train network in the whole world and also known as the lifeline for local travel within the city.

 

Metro Connectivity: The metro work for the city is in full swing and enhancing the overall connectivity of the city. The Government of Maharashtra along with MMRDA are developing Mumbai Metro in a phased manner to provide convenient intra-city travel to the citizens. It is being built in three phases to decongest the Mumbai local railway. Ultimately, the metro network is envisioned to have at least 7 lines across about 235 km route length. The system is mostly being built underground or on elevated viaducts, with a tiny portion at grade. Besides this, the city boasts India’s first monorail system that opened its phase 1 in July, 2014.


Airport Connectivity/Aviation: India’s first major airport, Juhu Aerodrom is situated in Mumbai though currently it only functions as a heliport and hosts a flying club. The main aviation hub in Mumbai is the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport located in Andheri. Mumbai has its international Airport has two terminals and a Domestic Airport to handle heavy air traffic. The city is going to have another upcoming International Airport which is being built in the adjoining city of Navi Mumbai.

Ports: Mumbai Port Trust and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust are the two major ports that together provide the largest port facilities in India.

It is a natural harbour with extensive and dry dock accommodation facilities and serves as an important base for the Indian Navy as well.

 

Bus Connectivity: Best runs air-conditioned luxury buses and affordable non AC buses with the minimum fare of 5 rupee on major routes, and also operates shuttle services from various parts of the city. There is an option of a bus pass to frequent users.
