Details of Faridabad

Faridabad is a city located in the Indian state of Haryana, which is part of the National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi.

The city is situated about 25 kilometres away from ISBT Delhi & bounded by the Union Territory of Delhi (Nation Capital) on its north, Gurgaon District on the west, the state of Uttar Pradesh (Noida & Greater Noida) on its east and district Palwal towards the south and has a population of approximately 1.5 million people.

The newly developed residential and industrial part of Faridabad (Sectors 66 to 89) between the Agra Canal and the Yamuna River is commonly referred to as Greater Faridabad (Nehar Par Area). The area is being developed as a self-sustained sub-city with wide roads, tall buildings, malls, educational institutions, and health and commercial centres. 

It has a thriving industrial sector in the Indian state of Haryana and is one of the major satellite cities of Delhi. The Faridabad city is located 284 kilometres south of the state capital Chandigarh. In the city, State-run bodies such as Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) and Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) have played an effective role in ensuring a healthy standard of living and world-class amenities for its residents.

About Faridabad

Presently Faridabad is divided into two parts, namely:

  • Old Faridabad
  • New Faridabad

Old Faridabad mainly belongs to industrial and farming areas whereas New Faridabad has become the hub for IT companies, corporate bodies and government departments. The New Faridabad has all the facilities to make it a potential modern city. 

The city encounters a sweltering and dry summer. The winters stay exceptionally cold and nippy. Faridabad has been described as the eighth quickest developing city in the world and the third most in India by the City Mayors Foundation survey. 

On 24th May 2016, Faridabad was included in the second list of Smart Cities Mission by the Government of India.

Faridabad, Palwal, and Nuh districts jointly fall under the Faridabad division of Haryana. A Division is headed by a Divisional Commissioner.

History Of Faridabad

The city is known for its industrial growth and commercialization in all sectors making it a major population centre. Though it has scaled new heights in terms of development, Faridabad still continues to uphold its historical values which are quite rich and fascinating.

Faridabad was founded in the year 1607 AD by Sheikh Farid also addressed as Baba Farid who was a treasurer of the Mughal Emperor Jehangir, laid the foundation of the city of Faridabad (‘Old Faridabad’ today) to protect the imperial Delhi- Agra highway, which passed through this route.

He also built a fort, a tank and a mosque. Afterwards, it became the headquarters of a pargana. After the rebellion of 1857, their estate was confiscated by the British Raj & the territory of Ballabhgarh was added to the Delhi district. It constituted a municipality in 1867.

Initially, Faridabad was part of the district of Gurgaon. Later on, on 15th August 1979, Faridabad was established as a separate district & became the 12th district of the Haryana state.

Road Connectivity:

Faridabad is well connected with Delhi through Delhi Faridabad Skyway (Badarpur Flyover). It is also connected to the cities of Gurugram through Faridabad Gurugram Road (SH137) and Gautam Buddha Nagar of Uttar Pradesh.

Metro Connectivity:

Faridabad is well-connected with major parts of Delhi/NCR up to the Delhi-Faridabad border. Delhi Metro Violet Line connects Faridabad with Delhi, having nine metro stations in the Faridabad corridor which are all elevated with a total length of 14 Km.It is one of the longest metro corridors in the National Capital Region (NCR).

There has been an extension in the Metro rail along Delhi-Mathura road, stretching up to Ballabgarh by adding two more stations - Sant Surdas Sihi and Raha Nahar Singh Ballabhgarh.

Airport Connectivity:

The city is served by Indira Gandhi International airport, which is at a distance of 40 km from the heart of the city with separate domestic and international terminals. Daily flights fly to all major cities of India and abroad.

Railway Connectivity:

Faridabad is one of the satellite towns of Haryana in NCR adjoining Delhi. It is situated on the Delhi-Agra-Gwalior highway. It is connected with high-speed Rajdhani and Shatabadi trains or Express trains to all major cities of India. It has its own railway station besides its proximity with the Nizamuddin Railway Station, New Delhi Railway Station & Old Delhi Railway Station.

Faridabad is on the broad gauge of the New Delhi – Mumbai Line.

By Bus:

There is a bus terminal in Faridabad besides its close proximity to the ISBT, New Delhi. There are frequent services along Faridabad-Delhi-Ambala-Chandigarh/Amritsar/Shimla route, Delhi-Faridabad-Mathura-Agra route and Faridabad-Delhi-Gurgaon-Jaipur route.

Haryana Roadways Volvo makes a stopover and passes through Karnal.

All the villages of the district are connected by metalled roads and have had electricity since 1970. The broad gauge Railway line of the Northern and North-Central Railway passes through the district and most of the trains going to the South and West of India pass through the District.

Faridabad has several parks and gardens, including the Town Park, the Eco Adventure Park, and the Shanti Van, which are popular among residents and tourists alike.

The economic base of the Town:

Faridabad is home to one of the largest industrial estates in Asia, which houses a large number of manufacturing industries. The economy of Faridabad is largely dependent on the industry. 

Faridabad is the largest exporter of henna (Mehandi) in India, the sale of henna from Faridabad is worth an estimated ₹250 crore (US$35 million)–₹300 crores (US$42 million) annually.
