In the 2011 Census, Thane had a population of 11,060,148, making it one of the most populous districts in the country. Even so, in August 2014, the district was split in two with the formation of a new Palghar district, leaving the reduced Thane district with a population of 8,070,032. The city of Thane serves as the district's administrative center.
Cities like Navi Mumbai, Kalyan-Dombivli, Mira-Bhayander, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Ambarnath, Badlapur, Murbad, and Shahapur are also important parts of this administrative division.
The Thane district is a part of the Maharashtra state, India, in the Konkan region. The districts of Palghar and Nashik to the east, Nashik to the northeast, and Pune and Ahmednagar to the north form its borders. The Arabian Sea forms the western boundary, while the Mumbai Suburban district and the Raigad District are to the southwest and south, respectively. It has a wide amphitheater-like basin in the south called Ulhas, and a hilly valley in the north called Vaitama, as well as plateaus and the slopes of the Sahyadri Mountains.
Thane District includes the northern portion of Salsette Island, which is separated from the mainland by the Ulhas estuary and the Thane Creek but is connected to the island city of Mumbai by means of reclaimed land. More than half of the district's economic and social growth has been largely due to industrialization. Eight industrial estates have been built by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation.
The industry in the district is doing well because of the international market, friendly ports like Mumbai, easy communication, and government facilities. There is a concentration of industries in the southern and western parts of the district.

In 1817, the British conquered the Peshwa and incorporated their new North Konkan district, of which Thane served as the district capital, into their Empire. Its current borders are a major departure from those of that time.
A portion of the South Konkan district was added to the North Konkan district in 1830, and the resulting territory was renamed Thane District in the year 1833.
Kolaba's Pen, Roha, and Mahad subdistricts, along with the Underi and Revadanda agencies, were consolidated into a single sub-collectorate under Thana in 1853; by 1869, however, they had broken off to form their own district, now known as Kolaba (now known as Raigad district).
In 1917, Bandra became the headquarters of a new mahal, and in 1920, Salsette was split into two talukas, North and South. South Salsette's 84 villages were moved from Thana District to the Bombay Suburban District (present Mumbai Suburban district). North Salsette became a mahal under Kalyan taluka in 1923 and Thane in 1926. Kelve-Mahim became Palghar. In 1945, 33 villages of the Bombay Suburban district were transferred to the Thana district, but 14 were returned in 1946 when the Aarey Milk Colony was formed.

Bus Connectivity
The bus system in the Thane area is extremely developed. Thane is linked to other cities and districts in Maharashtra by buses operated by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC).and BEST serves the Greater Mumbai Area, including the cities of Thane and Mira-Bhayandar.
Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) was launched on 9 February 1989 by the Thane Municipal Corporation with a fleet of 289 buses serving 45 routes out of 2 bus depots and 8 bus stands, carrying an average of 2.8 lakh passengers per day.
On 23 January 1996, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation began operating its own transportation service, Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT). Initially, with a fleet of 25 buses, NMMT has since grown to include 256 buses, including the first hybrid bus in India.
The city of Mira Bhayandar, India, has its own municipal bus system called the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Transport (MBMT). Both the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation and the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation operate their own municipal bus systems, known respectively as Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Transport (KDMT) and Ulhasnagar Municipal Transport (UMT). There are 345.73 kilometres of railroad tracks crisscrossing the western and central parts of the district.

The district is connected with diverse parts of India by the Indian Railways.

Local trains on the Western Railway run from Churchgate station all the way to Dahanu Road station in the neighbourhood. From Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, local Central Railway trains head north to Kalyan, Ulhasnagar, Ambarnath, Badlapur, Karjat, and Kasara. A section of the district is traversed by the Konkan Railway system. Commuter service between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai and Panvel via this line has recently begun.
Road Connectivity
The district is conveniently linked to the rest of the state by road. It has easy access to major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nasik, Raigad, and the rest of the state. In March 1999, the Public Works Department and the Jilha Parishad took responsibility for a total of 5837 kilometres of road. As of March 31st, 1999, the total length of roads in the Thane district was 5837 kilometres. Of this, 226 kilometres were classified as national highways and 1195 kilometres were classified as state highways.

Metro Connectivity
The Thane metro Mass Rapid Transit system has been proposed by the Thane district for the Indian city of Thane in the state of Maharashtra. Along its 29-kilometre (18-mile) length, it will have 22 stations (26 km elevated and 3 km underground). When completed, the Thane station on the Metro-5 (Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan) line will connect to the Wadala-Thane-Kasarvadavli station on the Metro-4 (Wadala-Thane-Kasarvadavli) corridor, an ambitious project undertaken by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
Ferry Connectivity
Ferry services are also available between the ports like Dahanu, Satpati, Mahim, Kalyan, Vasai, and Uttan.
Infrastructure Facilities
The district's infrastructure is the primary driver of its Industrial Development. The district of Thane is the third most industrialized in the State. Its progress toward industrialization accounts for more than half of the district's economic and social development. Throughout the area, the MIDC has constructed ten separate Industrial Estates.
The area's rapid industrialization can be attributed to Mumbai's thriving international marketplace, the port's convenient transportation links, and state government subsidies.
Tarapur, in the Palghar taluka of the district, is home to the country's first atomic energy project, which was initiated with the goal of producing electricity.
Industry
The Thane district of Maharashtra, India, is a particularly prosperous industrial region. There are cotton as well as non-cotton power looms industries in the district. They are mainly situated at Bhiwandi, Thane and Kalyan. For centuries, Bhiwandi has been known for its handicrafts. The raw material required by these industries is cotton yarn, art silk, Indian wool, rayon yarn, nylon, polyester yarn, viscose yarn, synthetic yarn, dye chemicals, bleaching chemicals, caustic soda, soda ash, starches and these raw materials are available in different parts of our country at different places such as Mumbai, Bhiwandi, Rajasthan, Mysore, Assam, Madras, Mudura, Nagpur and Punjab, etc.
These industries also export their products to different countries. Nylon synthetic is exported to the Middle East, Readymade garments to the U.S.A., U.K., West Germany, Switzerland and Austria, embroidered fabrics to the Middle East and South-East Asia, Fabrics, Garments and Yarn to Singapore. Aden, West Indies, U.K., U.S.S.R., Srilanka and Cotton and Art Silk Waste Blankets to Nepal.
Fisheries
Fisheries constitute an important industry in the Thane district and provide employment to about 75% of the people. Marine fishery predominates over inland fishery in the district. The important fishing centers in the district are Dahanu, Pokharan-Uchheli, Nawapur, Murabe, Satputi, Datiware, Arnala, Vasai and Urran. The commercially important varieties of fish available in large quantities are Saranga (White Pomfret), Halwa (Black Pomfret) Durha, Dadha, Rawas, Ghol, Koth, Bombil (Bombay Duck), Kolambi, Kolim (Karaandi), Wam etc. in the district.
