Mumbai Suburban District (formerly called as Bombay Suburban district) is the second most populous district of Maharashtra state in Konkan Division after Thane. Being a part of Mumbai city, its headquarters is at Bandra a suburb of Mumbai city. The District consists of three administrative subdivisions, namely :
Mumbai Suburban District is divided into two Sub Divisional Offices i.e. SDO Western Suburb and SDO Eastern Suburb. This district consists of 87 villages along with 4 Parliamentary Constituencies and 26 Assembly Constituencies that are part of the Mumbai Suburban District. Administrative limits of districts are from Mahim Causeway to Dahisar, Kurla to Mulund and Kurla to Trombay.
The district has a population density of 25,291.28 inhabitants per square kilometer. As per statistics, Mumbai Suburban is the second smallest district of the Maharashtra state after Mumbai city district. According to Census 2011, Mumbai Suburban had a population of 9,356,962 which represents 8.33 percent of the total Maharashtra population.

This District came in force w.e.f. on 1st December 1940. In April 1950, the Municipal limits of Bombay were expanded by merging the Bombay Suburban District and Bombay City to form the Greater Bombay Municipal Corporation. On 1 October 1990, the Greater Bombay district was bifurcated to form two revenue districts namely, Bombay City and Bombay Suburban, though they continued to be administered by the same Municipal Administration.
In 1996 Bombay Suburban district was renamed to Mumbai suburban district. Since then, Mumbai Suburban District consists of three Talukas, namely:

Road Connectivity
Mumbai is well connected through Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) and other state transport corporation buses. The major Bus stands are Mumbai Central, Parel and Borivali.

Railway Connectivity
The main Railway stations are Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Bandra Terminus, Mumbai Central and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Railway Station, Andheri Railway Station, Kurla and many more.
Trains arriving from West, East and Central India rest at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. Bombay Central Station has trains coming from North India usually.
Airport Connectivity
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is located in Santacruz, Mumbai is one of the major airports of India. The airport has two terminals catering to both domestic as well as international flights.
This airport connects Mumbai with different corners of the globe like Mauritius, Kuala Lumpur, London, Hong Kong, Amsterdam, Abu Dhabi, Goa, Lucknow, Delhi, Jeddah, Singapore and many others.
Local Train Connectivity
The Mumbai Suburban Railway (Marathi: मुंबई उपनगरीय रेल्वे) (colloquially called local trains or simply locals) consists of exclusive inner suburban railway lines augmented by commuter rail on main lines serving outlying suburbs to serve the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Spread over 390 kilometres (240 mi), the suburban railway operates 2,342 train services and carries more than 7.5 million commuters daily. Mumbai local is also famously known as the lifeline of Mumbai
Monorail Connectivity
Mumbai Monorail system in the city of Mumbai, Maharashtra, built as part of a major expansion of public transport in the city which is implemented and operated by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
The First line became operational in 2014 connecting Jacob Circle, Wadala and Mahul via Chembur, providing a feeder service to the existing Mumbai Suburban Railway. It consists of 17 stations covering a distance of 19.5 Kms.
The Mumbai Metro is a rapid transit (MRT) system which serves the city and the nearby district areas. It is basically incorporated to downgrade the traffic congestion in the city and supplement the overcrowded Mumbai Suburban Railway network.
Mumbai Metro has one operational metro line connecting Versova to Ghatkopar. This line became operational in 2014, with 12 stations covering a distance of 11.40kms. There are another five metro lines under different stages of construction.
