Details of Mumbai City District

Mumbai City District is a district of Maharashtra which lies in the Konkan Division. The district, along with the Mumbai Suburban District, makes up the metropolis of Mumbai. The city area is popularly known as the "island city" or South Mumbai (Old Mumbai).

It stretches from Colaba in the south to Mahim and Sion in the north. The district has an area of 157 sq. km and as per Census 2011, it has a population of 3,085,411 which constituted 2.75 percent of the total population of Maharashtra.

The district has a population density of 19,652 people per sq. km. The district is situated on the West coast and is also known as the Financial Capital of India.

It is surrounded by water on the three sides which includes: 

  • The open Arabian Sea to the West and South 
  • Thane Creek to the East.
  • Mumbai Suburban district bordered to the North.

Mumbai City District is Headquartered at Old Custom House Mumbai. Being a part of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) there are no Zilla Parishads in Mumbai.

Airport Connectivity

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport which is located in the adjoining district of Mumbai Suburban. It is India's second-busiest airport after Delhi Airport and one of the main international gateways to the country.

Many international airlines such as British Airways, United, Emirates, Malaysia Airlines, Lufthansa, Qantas, and Singapore Airlines, fly into Mumbai.

Railway Connectivity

Mumbai city district is well connected through railway lines from all over India.

Some of the key railway stations of the district are Vadala Road railway station, Grant Road railway station, Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar railway station, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Sewari railway station, Sion railway station, etc.

Roadways Connectivity

The district has a good road connectivity with numerous National highway’s which includes NH-3, NH-4, NH-6, NH-8, NH-48 (Delhi-Bengaluru)NH-66 and the Mumbai-Pune expressway. These highways radiate from the city providing links to all parts of the country.

The road conditions are generally in better condition as compared to other parts of the country. The comfortable air conditioned blue cabs are available to Pune and Ahmednagar-Nashik from opposite Asiad Bus Termina in Dadar and Lakhamsi Nappoo Rd near Dadar east railway station respectively. 

Local Suburban Rail Connectivity

Most people travel in Mumbai using the Suburban Rail Network commonly referred to as "Mumbai Local". Mumbai has an extensive network, with three lines:

  • The Western Line,
  • The Central Main Line, and
  • The Harbour Line.

These lines connect commuters to a central city from adjacent suburbs or commuter towns.


Metro Connectivity

Mumbai, though very well served by a suburban rail network, is a latecomer to the Metro Rail Transit system. Till now it only has one 14 km long East-West line in operation since June 2014 connecting the Central Line suburb of Ghatkopar with Versova in the West. However, construction work is going on at a fast pace on five other lines of crisis crossing the city, including the 33 km long Colaba- Bandra - SEEPZ underground line, which will provide the connection between the airport and South Mumbai CBD.  


Mumbai Monorail

Mumbai Monorail is a monorail system in the city of MumbaiMaharashtra, built as part of a major expansion of public transport city which provides feeder service to the existing Mumbai City district railway and many other stations.
