MHADA (Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority) is a Special planning Authority that is responsible for the development and construction of affordable housing for people in the state of Maharashtra, India. The primary objective of MHADA is to provide affordable housing to people belonging to low and middle-income groups.
The Authority is constituted of a President, a Vice President and five non-official Members all appointed by the State Government.
MHADA offers a distinctive service to the community through the Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board, which is the leading board that renovates and rebuilds the old and deteriorated cessed buildings in Mumbai's island city. The board also provides assistance in relocating the occupants of such buildings. The island city has approximately 16,000 cessed buildings that require attention.

Construction of Housing Projects:

MHADA achieved completion of 11014 units consisting of 9654 tenements, 1360 other. The achievement includes 6939 units for EWS & 1978 units for LIG group and 567 units for MIG, 170 units for HIG, 1360 units for others. Thus, the percentage of EWS & LIG housing works out to 80.96% while the percentage of MIG, HIG and others is 19.04 %.
MHADA has prepared a Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) for Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) for the period 2016-2036, which provides a broad framework for the region's development.
Some of the key strategies proposed in the CDP for achieving these objectives include:
Development of affordable housing on government-owned land.
Promotion of redevelopment of old and dilapidated buildings in Mumbai.
Development of new townships and growth centers in the MMR.
Creation of green belts and open spaces to enhance the quality of life.
Improvement of public transport infrastructure, including the development of metro rail systems, suburban rail networks, and bus rapid transit systems.
Promotion of sustainable transportation modes such as cycling and walking.
Development of social infrastructure such as healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and community centers.

The lottery provides an opportunity for people to purchase affordable homes in Maharashtra.
MHADA's area of coverage includes urban as well as rural areas of Maharashtra. The organization has undertaken various housing projects in cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, and other major urban centers, as well as in smaller towns and villages across the state.
MHADA has regional offices located in various cities of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Nasik, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, and Konkan. These regional offices are responsible for the development and construction of housing projects in their respective regions.
