The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) is the primary planning and development agency responsible for the growth and development of the city of Bangalore, India. It was established in 1976 to ensure the planned development of the city, by creating comprehensive master plans, developing infrastructure, and regulating land use. The BDA's primary responsibility is to prepare and implement the Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) for Bangalore, which is a long-term plan that outlines the city's development goals and strategies. The CDP is designed to ensure that the city grows in a planned and sustainable manner, by balancing the needs of different stakeholders and addressing issues such as housing, transportation, environmental conservation, and economic development.

The BDA is also responsible for acquiring and developing land, constructing infrastructure such as roads, water supply, drainage, and sewage systems, and regulating land use through zoning and building regulations. It works closely with other government agencies and stakeholders, such as the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), to coordinate development activities in the city.

In addition to its primary responsibilities, the BDA is also involved in several other activities, such as creating green zones and parks, developing affordable housing, providing public amenities such as markets and bus stands, and promoting economic development by creating industrial estates and special economic zones.

The BDA has allotted 76,000 sites to individuals for the construction of residential dwellings since its formation. It also caters to the felt needs of the particular locality therefore more than 800 civic amenity sites have been given for use by various public utilities and organizations. B.D.A. Cadre and Recruitment Rules have been revised and sent to Government for approval in April 2001.

  • Peripheral Ring Road (PRR): The PRR is a proposed 65-km-long expressway that will encircle the city of Bangalore, connecting the major highways that radiate from the city. The project is expected to reduce traffic congestion in the city and improve connectivity to other parts of the state.
  • Metro Rail Project: The Bangalore Metro Rail Project is an ongoing project aimed at providing an efficient and affordable public transport system for the city. As per the Karnataka Town and Country Planning Act of 1961, the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) operates as a regulatory body that is responsible for formulating a Comprehensive Development Plan for the Bangalore metropolitan region in a manner prescribed by law. With a jurisdiction of 1219 sq. km., the BDA oversees the planning and development of infrastructure, provisions of development sites and services, and the housing requirements of underprivileged individuals in Bangalore. This also includes the area that falls under the jurisdiction of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike (BBMP).

Metro Routes

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), which operates the Bangalore Metro, has developed two major metro routes in collaboration with the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) to improve transportation in the city These are:

  • Green Line (North-South): The Green Line of the Bangalore Metro runs from Nagasandra in the north to Yelachenahalli in the south, covering a distance of 24.20 km with 24 stations. The line passes through some of the city's busiest areas such as Majestic, Cubbon Park, and MG Road. The Green Line intersects with the Purple Line at the Kempegowda Interchange station, providing connectivity to the entire city.
  • Purple Line (East-West): The Purple Line of the Bangalore Metro runs from Baiyappanahalli in the east to Mysore Road in the west, covering a distance of 18.22 km with 17 stations. The line passes through some of the city's major hubs such as Indiranagar, MG Road, and Rajajinagar. The Purple Line intersects with the Green Line at the Kempegowda Interchange station, providing connectivity to the entire city.
The BMRCL has also proposed the development of several new metro lines, which are under various stages of planning and construction. These include the Yellow Line, the Pink Line, and the Red Line, which will provide connectivity to new areas of the city and further improve the transportation infrastructure in Bangalore.
