Yellow Line to railway station or Dwarka? Haryana to choose from 2 routes

GURGAON: The proposed Metro corridor from Gurgaon to Dwarka has moved out of the drawing board after years and is looking at a revival with the Haryana government receiving feasibility reports on the route from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

There are two reports the DMRC has prepared for the government — one a 12km route from Huda City Centre, currently the terminal station on the Yellow line, to Gurgaon railway station and the other a full-length corridor right up to Dwarka Sector 21, where DMRC's Blue and Airport Express lines converge.

The latter is a 27km route that also starts at Huda City Centre, turns into the expressway at Hero Honda Chowk via Subhash Chowk, heads towards the Gurgaon railway station and goes up to Dwarka. The reports have been submitted to theHaryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC).

The government, through the Gurgaon Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), has now sought suggestions from residents of the city, following which a final it will take a decision on which route to opt for.

Metro connectivity has been a sore point for the Millennium City, which has seen Noida take rapid strides in the coverage and reach of Metro. Between the year-end and the end of 2018, three new Metro corridors are expected to start operations in Noida (Aqua Line to Greater Noida, Magenta Line to Kalkaji Mandir and Blue Line extension to Sector 62). By contrast, Gurgaon has seen no extension of the DMRC corridors.

"Basically, there are two routes to choose from," V Umashankar, additional CEO, GMDA, told TOI. "The DMRC's techno-feasibility study is done and we have invited suggestions and comments from Gurgaon residents, which they can submit in the next 15 days. A final decision on the route will be taken thereafter," he added. If the shorter route is selected, the land for the depot has to be identified by HMRTC before taking up the Metro corridor project.

The route between Huda City Centre and Dwarka Sector 21, however, will pass through territories of Haryana and Delhi, and therefore the land issues and other modalities for operation and maintenance will have to be resolved by the two governments (Haryana and Delhi) before taking up the project.

The DMRC had first submitted a project report way back in January 2012 to the then Congress-led Haryana government to connect Dwarka Sector 21 with Iffco Chowk, via Sector 23 and Udyog Vihar. The route was supposed to be completed by 2016. However, first the Congress and then the BJPkept dragging their feet on the project, till chief minister ML Khattar finally rejected the route as economically unviable. Then, the DMRC was again asked to look for new routes.

Gurgaon MP Rao Inderjit Singh claimed to have played a role in selecting these two routes. "We want large areas of old Gurgaon to be connected so that people do not have to use their personal vehicles even to reach Metro stations. I am happy that the feasibility report is out and I hope physical work will begin soon," he said.
