The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has announced a plan to develop a 1,575-kilometre metro network throughout the state by 2047.

UPMRC Managing Director Sushil Kumar unveiled the blueprint during the "Viksit Uttar Pradesh for Viksit Bharat@2047" seminar, reportedThe Times Of India.

The project will begin with significant expansions in the three existing metro cities, adding 225 km in Lucknow, 200 km in Kanpur, and 100 km in Agra.

It will also extend metro corridors of 150 km in other major urban centers, including Noida-Greater Noida, Varanasi, and Prayagraj.

Key districts such as Gorakhpur, Ayodhya, and Meerut are planned to receive 50 km metro networks each.

UPMRC aims to complete approximately 790 km of this extensive network by 2035.

Kumar highlighted that the project is financially viable, noting that the state will contribute Rs 1,040 crore annually for the initial 525 km expansion.

He also pointed out UPMRC’s operational expertise, saying that its existing metro systems are already setting efficiency benchmarks.
