On Friday, officials of Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) and Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) took note of the city's traffic pattern and discussed plans for the Meerut Metro project. Officials also met the Meerut divisional commissioner, and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed so that a survey could begin for the project.

SC Mishra, chief engineer, Meerut Development Authority (MDA), said, "The team has taken an overview of the city today and checked traffic patterns. This is a positive step towards the metro plan in the city."

Mishra added, "The team of LMRC and RITES has also suggested that elevated metro routes be laid, rather than underground ones, as earlier planned, so that the project is cost effective. The underground routes would have cost somewhere between Rs 350 and Rs 400 crore; the elevated route which will cost Rs 200 crore, decreasing the budget."

Assistant town planner Vivek Bhaskar said, "The teams have also taken stock of areas surrounding Meerut and plans are on to frame metro routes across the city."

The team of officials working for the project also said a team from the Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) will be contacted, so that the Delhi Metro is connected to Meerut's metro.

Managing director, LMRC, Kumar Kamlesh and Tarun Jain who spearheaded the team from RITES, reached the city on Thursday.

The officials visited Ghantaghar, HRS Chowk, Maliyana, Bypass Road, Partapur, Bijli Bamba Bypass, Hapur Stand and Medical College on Friday to take stock of routes for the project.
