The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has forged a landmark partnership with the UK Government to enhance Mumbai's metro network. Signed on January 27, 2025, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) unites the UK Department for Transport, Crossrail International, and MMRDA to accelerate the development of the city’s ambitious 337-km metro system, with 59 km already operational.

This collaboration focuses on creating an integrated transport network, including operational strategies for Mumbai's upcoming 14-line metro system. The initiative will benefit from UK expertise, leveraging institutions like Transport for London and Network Rail.

Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee emphasised the transformative nature of the partnership, highlighting $40 billion in investments secured at Davos. The MoU prioritises sustainable urban growth through innovative funding models like Land Value Capture and Transit-Oriented Development while addressing first- and last-mile connectivity and embracing digital transformation.

This UK-India collaboration is set to redefine Mumbai's public transport landscape, aligning with the city’s rapid growth trajectory.
