From this month-end, expect the perennial congestion at Hero Honda Chowk to reduce considerably. The much-awaited flyover at the busy crossing on Delhi-Gurgaon expressway will be fully functional and thrown open to traffic on June 30, reducing traffic load at the existing crossing.

The Gurgaon-Jaipur side of the flyover has already been opened to traffic. And, on June 30, as per the deadline, the Jaipur to Delhi side of the flyover will also open, officials of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said on Friday.

"Work on the Jaipur-Delhi side of the flyover is on fast track. We have completed around 80% of the work and are set to meet the deadline," said Ashok Sharma, project director, NHAI, told TOI.

The four lanes on the Delhi-Jaipur side of the flyover were constructed using extra space, including service road as diversion road. On the other side (Jaipur-Delhi), for constructing the remaining four lanes of the flyover, NHAI has barricaded the area and only vehicles for Sector 10-A are allowed to use the service road.

Once fully operational, the flyover will benefit the residents of the areas around the flyover and new sectors. Around 40,000 to 50,000 vehicles are expected to use the flyover, which will cater to heavy traffic from Pataudi, Jaipur, Manesar, Delhi and parts of northern Gurgaon.

The eight-lane, 1.4-km-long flyover was constructed as part of three-layer crossing — flyover, underpass and existing roads — at Hero Honda Chowk. Work on construction of the underpass is also on fast track. In fact, work on the underpass and the flyover picked up pace after waterlogging led to Gurujam at the crossing in July last year.

Officials said the work on the underpass will be completed by the end of this year. "We are utlitising all the resources and manpower to meet the flyover deadline because we are aware that the underpass cannot be completed before the rains and there will be some waterlogging down there, disrupting the work during those months," said Sharma.

Construction of the Rs 197.84 crore project began in November 2014, and was expected to be completed by May 2017. But initially, it was slowed down due to delay in clearance of land required for the project. Litigation, and lack of coordination between departments, delayed the clearance of the land needed for the project.
