Preparations are underway to extend the Aqua Line of Noida Metro to Greater Noida West in Uttar Pradesh, with the project soon to be submitted to the Public Investment Board (PIB) for approval. Once completed, the expansion will provide significant relief to commuters in Noida and Greater Noida, benefiting more than 4 lakh people directly.
The project will be carried out in two phases. In the first phase, the Metro line will be extended from Sector-51 to Sector-2, and in the second phase, from Greater Sector-2 to Greater Sector-5. Currently, the Aqua Line runs from Sector-51 to the Greater Noida Depot, with plans already in place to extend it further to Sector-142.
The new Metro line will span 17.435 km and include 11 stations. Of this, 3.33 km with three stations will be in Noida, while 14.105 km with eight stations will be in Greater Noida. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 2,991 crore, with Noida bearing 33 percent of the cost and Greater Noida 67 percent. Around 1.23 lakh passengers are expected to use this corridor daily.
The funding plan for the project has also been finalised. The Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh will each contribute 12.97 percent. The NCR Planning Board will provide 44.98 percent, while the Greater Noida Authority and Noida Authority will contribute 10.04 percent and 5 percent respectively. Additional funding will come from GIA and GeoUP, ensuring that the entire financial requirement is met.
The extended corridor will feature several important stations. Sector-51, already operational, will serve as the starting point, while Sector-61 will be developed into an interchange hub. Other stations include Sector-70, Sector-122, Sector-123, Greater Sector-4, Ecotech-12, Greater Sector-2, Greater Sector-3, Greater Sector-10, Greater Sector-12, and Knowledge Park-5. These additions are expected to make travel more convenient for residents across Noida and Greater Noida.
Approval from the PIB is the first step towards execution. A presentation for the project is likely to be made in the last week of November or the first week of December. If approval is granted, construction is expected to begin within three months, with civil works targeted for completion by the end of next year.
According to a Dainik Jagran report, Mahendra Prasad, Executive Director of Noida Metro Rail Corporation, confirmed that a new route is being planned via Greater Noida Extension. He added that the project will not only ease traffic congestion between Noida and Greater Noida but also offer faster, more comfortable travel while contributing significantly to the development of the region.
