HUDA will soon undertake a project to widen Golf Course Extension Road by three metres on either side. This is being done to ensure smoother traffic flow to and from the 16-lane expressway, for which construction is under way. According to a senior HUDA official, the the 6.7-km stretch of the Golf Course Extension Road (also known as Southern Peripheral Road) between Ghata and Badshapur Chowk is being taken up for widening.

"The road is currently 9.7m wide, with three lanes on either side for a 6.7-km length from Ghata to Sohna Road. Following directions to take up the widening work, the engineering wing has prepared a plan to widen either side by almost three metres making the total width about 12.7 metres on each side. This would essentially add one extra lane on either side, making it four lanes," the official said.

However, when TOI spoke to HUDA administrator Anita Yadav, she said an estimate has been prepared for the project and would be sent soon for approval.

"The special repair and maintenance of the road is already under way and an estimate of Rs 35 crore has been prepared for widening of the road. The road needs to be widened to take on an expected surge in traffic from Golf Course Road once the construction work here is completed," she said.

With over three dozen residential colonies along Golf Course Extension Road currently using the stretch the traffic here is set to see a surge once the 16-lane expressway providing a signal-free corridor up to NH-8 is functional by its deadline of December 2016.

The stretch would take in traffic coming in from NH-8 via Golf Course Road once the 16-lane expressway is ready and is also supposed to meet NH-8 again at Kherki Daula. However, the work on connecting the stretch to NH-8 via Kherki Daula is yet to take off due to land litigation involving about 15 residents of Fazilpur village who are to be relocated by HUDA as they fall within the alignment of the SPR.

"We are in the works of relocating them by providing them alternative plots in HUDA sectors for which a survey is being done. The work for this is currently in progress," Yadav said.
