Double-decker metro takes shape as Delhi readies first viaduct for train runs

Delhi’s first double-decker metro viaduct, between Bhajanpura and Yamuna Vihar stations on the upcoming Maujpur–Majlis Park corridor, is now ready for the movement of trains, marking a major milestone in the city’s Phase IV metro expansion.

While metro operations can begin, the road ramp connecting the lower deck for vehicular traffic is expected to be completed later this year.

The Bhajanpura–Yamuna Vihar stretch is part of the 12.3-km Maujpur–Majlis Park corridor, an extension of the Pink Line. Once operational, this will make the Pink Line the first circular route in the Delhi Metro network.

DMRC officials said trial runs on the corridor have been completed and the mandatory inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) has also been carried out.

The 1.4-km-long double-decker viaduct, which cuts through densely populated neighbourhoods in northeast Delhi, is designed to carry metro trains on the upper deck and vehicles on the lower deck. Construction of the road ramp had been delayed due to pending tree-cutting permissions, which have now been cleared.

"Work on the Maujpur to Majlis Park corridor has been completed. Trial runs are in progress, and the inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) is also done," said a DMRC official."Construction of the ramp for the road section of the double-decker viaduct, which was pending, is now being taken up since tree-cutting permission in that area was just received and will be completed this year itself," said the official.

Delhi Metro is building three such double-decker viaducts in association with the Delhi government as part of Phase IV. The second, a 2.2-km-long structure between Azadpur and Ashok Vihar stations, is coming up on the Janakpuri West–RK Ashram Marg corridor, an extension of the Magenta Line.

Foundation work for the ramp section is underway, while girders for the independent flyover are being erected. The viaduct is expected to be ready this year, though the full 29.3-km corridor will open in phases during the next financial year.

The third and longest double-decker viaduct, spanning 2.4 km, is under construction between Sangam Vihar and Ambedkar Nagar stations on the Tughlakabad–Aerocity corridor, also known as the Golden Line. Integrated metro piers and viaduct spans are currently being built along this stretch.

Under DMRC’s Phase IV expansion, six new corridors with a combined length of 112.4 km and 94 stations have been planned, including three priority corridors featuring double-decker viaducts. Work has also begun on the 8.3-km Saket G Block–Lajpat Nagar corridor, an extension of the Golden Line, where India’s first three-coach metro trains will operate to cater to short-distance urban travel in south Delhi.

Construction on two other corridors — Inderlok–Indraprastha (Green Line extension) and Rithala–Narela–Kundli (Red Line extension) — is set to begin later this year. Additionally, the Union Cabinet has approved three more corridors under the Phase IV expansion: RK Ashram Marg–Indraprastha, Tughlakabad–Kalindi Kunj, and Aerocity–Terminal 1.
