Delhi–Noida commute set for major relief as 6-lane Chilla Elevated Corridor gains pace

The long-delayed 5.5-km elevated road linking Delhi and Noida is now nearly half complete and is expected to open by June–July 2027, promising smoother traffic flow, faster airport connectivity, and reduced congestion at key bottlenecks.

One of the most-awaited traffic relief projects between Delhi and Noida has finally gathered momentum, with the Chilla Elevated Corridor now nearing the halfway mark in construction. As per News 18, officials said the 5.5-km six-lane elevated road is around 47% complete and is likely to be opened for commuters by June or July 2027, ahead of its original December 2027 target.

The elevated corridor is being developed to ease severe congestion at the Delhi–Noida entry point, especially around Chilla BorderMayur Vihar, and the stretch leading towards the Mahamaya Flyover and Noida Expressway.

At present, thousands of commuters travelling daily between East Delhi and Noida face long traffic snarls during peak hours. Once operational, the elevated road is expected to significantly reduce travel time and provide smoother movement for vehicles heading towards Greater Noida and the upcoming Noida International Airport, News 18 reported.

Authorities said the pace of construction has improved considerably since work resumed in March last year after prolonged delays.

According to officials, foundation work has been completed, and all 85 piers required for the elevated structure have already been erected. The next stage involves the construction of pier caps, the installation of girders and precast segments, followed by the casting of deck slabs that will eventually support vehicular movement, according to News 18 report.

Senior officials recently reviewed the project and directed agencies to speed up work to ensure early completion. The Chilla Elevated Corridor has faced repeated setbacks since it was first conceptualised in 2012.

The project remained stalled for years due to issues including environmental and administrative clearances, funding constraints, pipeline realignment work involving GAIL infrastructure, contractor disputes, and disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Officials said that by 2020, only around 13% of the project had been completed despite several deadlines being announced earlier. The estimated cost of the project also rose substantially — from around Rs 605 crore to nearly Rs 893 crore — after revised tenders and changes in construction costs.

The corridor is expected to become particularly important once the Noida International Airport becomes fully operational.

Authorities are also working on additional infrastructure upgrades around the Yamuna region, including a proposed 31.2-km elevated corridor along the Yamuna Pushta road aimed at improving airport connectivity from central Noida and Delhi.

Urban planners believe the Chilla Elevated Road could emerge as a key alternative route for commuters travelling towards Greater Noida, Jewar, and other rapidly developing areas in the National Capital Region, according to News 18 report.

Daily commuters, office-goers, and logistics operators are expected to benefit significantly once the elevated road becomes operational, especially during rush hours when traffic at Chilla Border often stretches for several kilometres.
