Commuters travelling between Delhi and Gurugram may soon experience reduced congestion, with the much-awaited tunnel connecting Dwarka Expressway to the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport expected to open by the end of May.
The development is likely to ease traffic pressure on National Highway-48 (NH-48), the primary route linking the two cities.
The tunnel has been built using advanced engineering standards and equipped with modern safety infrastructure, including CCTV surveillance and a dedicated war room for real-time monitoring, according to News18 Hindi.
Once operational, the tunnel is expected to streamline travel between key areas such as Gurugram, Vasant Kunj, Dwarka, and Alipur.
Tunnel to boost regional connectivity
Spanning 3.6 kilometres and comprising eight lanes, the new tunnel will be India’s widest of its kind. It has been constructed beneath the IGI Airport premises and will provide a direct route to the Singhu Border in Alipur.
This will help facilitate smoother travel from Gurugram, Faridabad, and Manesar towards northern destinations like Sonipat, Panipat, and Chandigarh.
The tunnel’s strategic location and layout are expected to benefit a large number of daily commuters and reduce the burden on surface roads, as per News18.
Focus on traffic congestion
Gurugram MP Rao Inderjit Singh confirmed the tunnel's near completion following a meeting with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari.
The Road Transport and Highways Minister has directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to prepare a comprehensive report on the current situation between Delhi and Gurugram within three months, News18 quoted Singh.
Plans for elevated road and toll plaza relocation
Discussions between the two ministers also included the proposed construction of an elevated road from Dhaula Kuan to Manesar and the potential relocation of the Kherki Daula toll plaza.
As per the report, the NHAI will assess the feasibility of an elevated corridor on NH_48 to manage increasing vehicular volumes.
With the tunnel nearing completion and additional infrastructure under consideration, the Delhi-Gurugram corridor is poised for significant traffic relief and improved intercity connectivity in the coming months.
