Chennai: Tamil Nadu is set to explore the possibility of introducing a Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), inspired by the Semi High-Speed Railway (SHR) between New Delhi and Meerut. The announcement was made by Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu while presenting the state budget for 2025-26 on Thursday.
Faster and Smoother Travel Ahead
The proposed RRTS aims to enhance regional connectivity and reduce traffic congestion by providing faster and more efficient transport options.
The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will conduct detailed feasibility studies to establish SHR systems with trains running at speeds of 160 kmph across three major corridors:
These routes have been identified based on their high commuter demand and potential for boosting economic growth.
Ropeways to Boost Tourism
In addition to the high-speed rail network, the Chennai Metro Rail Corporation will also assess the feasibility of introducing ropeway systems in popular tourist destinations such as Mamallapuram, Udhagamandalam (Ooty), and Kodaikanal.
These high-altitude transport systems aim to offer safe and convenient travel options in hilly regions while enhancing tourism accessibility.
With these initiatives, Tamil Nadu’s transport infrastructure is poised for a significant transformation, promising improved connectivity and smoother travel experiences for residents and visitors alike.
