Bengluru metro: Fares, feeder routes not clear

With only a day left for President Pranab Mukherjee to inaugurate the Sampige Road-Yelachenahalli Metro line, operationalizing the entire Phase 1 of the project, BMRCL is not yet ready with its fare chart for the new route. BMTC, too, is yet to unveil details of its feeder services on the new routes and scale up its services on other routes.

Passenger traffic is expected to shoot up in the coming days on all the Metro routes.

BMRCL said it will upload fare details for the new routes by Thursday evening or Friday, something citizens are eagerly waiting for. The new route will open to the public on Sunday afternoon. Megha G, a resident of Jayanagar who works on MG Road, is eager to take the Metro but is dogged by doubts. She is wondering whether she will have to buy two tickets for a journey: first at the boarding station and another at the interchange.

BMRC officials said there would be one ticket at a consolidated fare for any journey, even if it includes switching trains at the interchange. The BMRC board is yet to approve the consolidated fares.

On the other hand, BMTC has decided to provide services on 110 feeder bus routes from stations dotting the 24km Green Line between Nagasandra and Yelachenahalli. There are 24 stations on the North-South corridor.

BMTC officials said they have conducted surveys on Twitter starting Monday, to understand the demands of Metro commuters along the corridor, and planned the routes accordingly.

It will induct 500 new buses into its fleet on Saturday and launch its pre-paid open loop smart cards which will get rid of cash transactions between conductors and passengers, and make commuting hassle-free.

Introduction of smart cards that can be used both on Metro and BMTC buses may take some more time as both agencies are yet to finalize this.
