Bengaluru–Vijayawada economic corridor to have access controlled Greenfield Highway, Gadkari approves project

Bengaluru: In a significant development that would take the road connectivity from Bengaluru to Vijayawada to new heights, the central government approved the Greenfield Highway on the Bengaluru–Vijayawada economic corridor. The 32-km long 6-lane access-controlled highway will be coming up between Chandrasekharapuram and Polavaram in Andhra Pradesh.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways approved the project under the Bharatmala Pariyojana scheme. The corridor will be constructed on the hybrid annuity model (HAM) with a budget of Rs 1292.65 crore, the ministry said.

"Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari approved Rs 1,292.65 crore under Bharatmala Pariyojana for the development of 32.00 Km long 6-lane access controlled greenfield highway from Chandrasekharapuram to Polavaram on (NH-544G) Bengaluru-Vijayawada Economic Corridor in hybrid annuity mode in Andhra Pradesh," a statement issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said.

The Bengaluru – Kadapa – Vijayawada economic corridor starts from Bengaluru STRR. It utilizes the existing Bengaluru – Hyderabad National Highway (NH- 44)up to the Kodikonda checkpost. The proposed Greenfield corridor starts from Kodikonda checkpost in Kodur village on NH-44 to Muppavaram village near Addanki on NH-16, minister Gadkari informed.
From Muppavaram to Vijayawada, the economic corridor utilizes the existing NH-16. In total, the entire Bengaluru-Vijayawada economic corridor will be 342.5 km long.

Estimated to cost Rs 19,200 crore, construction of this estimated will be executed via 14 packages. As per the current plan, it will be opened for public use by 2026.

Meanwhile, Mysuru-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha informed that the much-awaited Mysuru-Bengaluru Expressway will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 11. The Rs 9000 crore project is expected to cut down the travel time for the 117 kilometres between the two most important cities of Karnataka from 3 hours to less than 90 minutes.
The expressway has been constructed as a six-lane stretch, along with two-lane service roads on either side of the expressway, making it a 10-lane corridor.
