Bengaluru To Hosur Metro: Proposal For Southern India’s First Interstate Metro Receives Centre’s Approval For Feasibility Study

The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has approved the proposal sent by Chennai Metro Rail Corporation (CMRL) seeking feasibility study for the Bengaluru-Hosur metro link.

With this, the government’s plans to connect Bommasandra in Bengaluru to the industrial hub of Hosur in Tamil Nadu, through a metro rail system, has taken another step forward.

As the approval comes in, the CMRL has commenced work on drafting a tender document to invite consultants for conducting a feasibility study for this interstate metro connectivity project

The Tamil Nadu government has already sanctioned Rs 75 lakh for the study. Both the states are likely to share the project expenses in their respective areas, along with the MoHUA.

The proposed route will span a length of 20.5 km. Of this stretch, 11.7 km will be in Karnataka and the remaining 8.8 km will run in Tamil Nadu.

According to the Tamil Nadu Government, the metro link between Hosur and Bengaluru would encourage further growth and development of the industrial town.

Currently, the town is home to over 2,000 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

Earlier, the CMRL had written to the MoHUA seeking approval to move forward with conducting a feasibility study for the construction of the proposed rail link.

For the same, the Karnataka Government, in 2022, had also written to MoHUA, giving its concurrence to the project, as it will support large number of people to travel between Hosur and Bengaluru without much hassle.

While Bengaluru remains as one of the megacities in India, Hosur in Tamil Nadi has emerged as a hub to several big conglomerates like TVS, Ashok Leyland and Titan.
It is further growing as a major centre for electric vehicles (EVs) infrastructure and industries in the state.

Many homegrown EV companies like Ather, Ola Electric, Simple Energy have already set up manufacturing units in the Hosur-Krishnagiri-Dharmapuri region.

With the project taking shape, this metro network will be the first interstate metro connectivity in southern India.
